Setting up the LON Channel (Release 3.3 and Prior)

For SmartServer 3.4 and higher, see Setting up the LON Channel

This section consists of the following:

LON Channel Overview

The LON channel in the SmartServer IoT Starter Kit includes the following devices:

  • An FT 6050 EVB target programmed with the multisensor example, which provides a simple LON device design with several different SPFT and UFPT functional blocks. This board supports multiple applications that can be used for various training exercises.

  • Smart Controls SC 100-MP device (powered using the 24 VAC power supply), which is programmed with an application that defines open loop sensors and actuators to model digital IO hardware.

The figure below shows the FT 6050 EVB and SC 100-MP devices, as well as how the switches and green panel indicators are connected to the SC 100-MP inputs and outputs as labeled in this photo.

Get started setting up the LON channel following the steps in the section below: Getting Started with LON Channel Setup

Getting Started with LON Channel Setup

To set up the LON channel, perform the following steps:

  1. If you are unsure of the starting condition of your SmartServer IoT, log into the SmartServer Configuration UI as user apollo with the password that appears on the SmartServer IoT (see Configure Your SmartServer).

    The Network Configuration page appears.

  2. Click the System tab (see also (Optional) Secure Your SmartServer page).

  3. Click Reset To Defaults.

The RESTORE DEFAULT SETTINGS dialog box appears.

  4. Enter the current password and confirm your password in the appropriate fields.  Restore Databases will preserve your network settings.  Restore Factory Settings group is used to take the SmartServer back to factory fresh condition.  Use the Reset Databases group.

  5. Click Update. Doing so clears out any existing network database configuration.

Please allow about 10 minutes for the reset process to complete.

Continue setting up the LON channel following the steps in the section below: Creating LON Devices

Creating LON Devices

  1. Access the SmartServer IoT CMS by clicking the CMS tab on the Configuration UI, or by entering the URL https://[SmartServer IP address]/cms/#/login

The SmartServer IoT CMS appears similar to the following:

  2. Go to the Devices Types widget and click the Import button ().

  3. Select the Lon Channel.dtp.zip from the Starter Kit archive → LON Channel folder in the DROP FILE HERE area.

  4. Click IMPORT FILE.

Notification messages will appear indicating that files are being uploaded and the CPU usage on the main CMS page will show increased activity. (Click  to close All information messages.)

  5. Click BACK on the Device Types widget.

  6. Go to the Devices widget, which will be used to add two LON devices to the system. Take note of the device names and character cases that will be used in creating devices.

  7. Click the Create button () on the Devices widget to add the FT 6050 EVB device as shown in the figure below (leave the Context field empty):
    • Name: MS-01
    • Device categoryEdge Device

  8. Click NEXT.

  9. Leave the UID field empty and set the following fields as shown in the figure below:
    • Integration method: Guided discovery
    • Owner: SmartServer IoT
    • Driver: LON
    • Device type: 6kEvbMultiSensor

  10. Press the service button located on the upper right portion of the FT 6050 EVB board as shown below.

Doing so populates the UID field with the NID of the FT 6050 EVB board as shown below. (You may need to set the Device type field again.)

  11. Click SAVE

  12. Click the Create button () on the Devices widget to add the Smart Controls SC 100-MP device as shown in the figure below (leave the Context field empty):
    • Name: DIO-01
    • Device categoryEdge Device

  13. Click NEXT.

  14. Leave the UID field empty and set the following fields as shown in the figure below:
    • Integration method: Guided discovery
    • Owner: SmartServer IoT
    • Driver: LON
    • Device type: SC100-MP

  15. Press the service button located on the lower left portion of the SC 100-MP device as shown below.

Doing so populates the UID field with the NID of the SC 100-MP device as shown below. (You may need to set the Device type field again.)

  16. Click SAVE

At this point, you will have two unprovisioned LON devices (indicated by the blue device fill) newly added to the SmartServer CMS Devices widget as shown below.

  17. Click the DIO-01 and MS-01 devices to select them, and then click the Action button () on the Devices widget and select the Provision selected edge devices action.

Both the MS-01 and DIO-01 device types are defined to include an application load at provisioning. The application load takes about 2-3 minutes to complete for each device. During this time, you can observe high frequency TX/RX LED activity on the U60. When this action is finished, the device fill for the devices will turn from blue to green as shown below.

You now have a pair of LON devices provisioned in the SmartServer IoT.

Verify working devices following the steps in the section below: Verifying LON Devices

Verifying LON Devices

  1. Click the Action button () on the Devices widget for the MS-01 device and select the Wink action to perform verification routines.

With these routines, you should be able to observe a flashing sequence of the blue LEDs for about 5s on the FT 6050 EVB board. (Wink behavior is not implemented with the SC 100-MP.)
  2. Click the Action button () on the Devices widget for the MS-01 device and select the View Datapoint action.

Doing so brings up the Datapoint Browser widget, which displays all of the datapoints for the MS-01 device.
