Frequently Asked Questions - Licensing

License Management is required with SmartServer 3.3 and higher.

The responses below provide answers to commonly asked license management questions:

General

What features are you licensing with the SmartServer licensing feature?

With SmartServer 3.3 and higher, the SmartServer may need device capacity and maintenance licenses depending on your application. Device capacity is required for provisioning devices in the SmartServer. Maintenance is required for upgrading SmartServer software. If you are using SmartServer 3.2 or prior releases, then you do not need a device capacity or maintenance license.

Maintenance licenses are sold based on device count with a 1-year or 3-year term. The number of devices for all current maintenance licenses must meet or exceed the number of devices for all device capacity licenses on the SmartServer.

For SmartServer Pi, a core license is required for SmartServer functionality.

When do I not need a SmartServer license?

If you are using SmartServer 3.2 or prior, and you never plan on upgrading the software, then you do not need a device capacity or maintenance license.

If you are using SmartServer 3.3 or higher:

  • If you only use the SmartServer for IP-852 routing or RNI, then you do not need a device capacity license. You will still need a maintenance license if you want or need to upgrade the SmartServer software in the future.
  • If you plan on using the SmartServer CMS web page to access the edge devices, or built functions like alarming, scheduling, data logging, or internal devices, then you will need both device capacity and maintenance licenses.

How do I activate a license on a SmartServer?

You can use the Manage Licenses dialog to manage your customer account and activate a license. The Manage Licenses dialog is accessible on system startup as well as from the SmartServer CMS.

Can I activate a license if my SmartServer does not have an internet connection?

Yes, you can use offline activation to activate your SmartServer licenses without an internet connection. See the Activating Capacity Licenses Offline Using the License Customer Portal and Activating Capacity Licenses Offline Using the License Partner Portal for more information.

Do I need a new license after I re-image the SmartServer IoT?

No. Re-imaging does not cause you to lose your current device capacity and maintenance licenses. If you re-image the SmartServer to a newer version you need to have a valid maintenance license depending on your application. If you re-image the SmartServer to the same or prior version then you don't need a valid maintenance license.

Do I need a new license after I perform a Reset Databases or Restore Factory Settings using the System Configuration page?

No. Reset Databases or Restore Factory Settings does not cause you to lose your current device capacity or maintenance licenses.

How do I manage licenses for Remote CMS?

When you purchase a Remote CMS license, Customer Success will transfer the license to a partner/customer account and complete the activation process. See Manage Licenses for more information as well as a description of available Remote CMS licenses.

Device Capacity License

What is a device capacity license and what does it cover?

A device capacity license is required for provisioning devices in the SmartServer. You cannot provision more devices than are available in your device capacity license. A device capacity license is not needed for features that do not require you to provision a device in the SmartServer, such as the LON router, BACnet router, or LON remote network interface (RNI) of the SmartServer.

Do I need a device capacity license if I only use the SmartServer as a router or remote network interface (RNI)?

No, a device capacity license is not required for a SmartServer that is used only as a LON router, BACnet router, or LON remote network interface (RNI).

How do I count the number of devices for a device capacity license?

A device will be counted if it is provisioned in the SmartServer. The SmartServer is counted as one device.

How can I easily determine how much of my device capacity is used?

The SmartServer CMS dashboard displays the number of devices that you have provisioned as well as your total licensed device capacity.

Will my devices be counted if I use the SmartServer in LON Independent Management Mode (IMM) and import the devices from IzoT Net Export utility?

Yes, imported, provisioned LON devices will be counted along with all other provisioned devices in the Devices widget.

Will there be exceptions when counting devices for a capacity license?

Yes, there are two exceptions: 1) the SmartServer itself and 2) the IOX I/O Expansion Module. A SmartServer always counts as one device, even if you have implemented internal applications that appear as a device in the CMS Devices widget. An IOX always counts as one device, even though it may appear as two or three devices in the CMS Devices widget.

Does device capacity restrict the number of datapoints that I can access/manage?

No, the device capacity license only limits the number of provisioned devices and not the number datapoints per device.

I have an installed SmartServer with the SmartServer 3.2 software – do I need a device capacity license after I upgrade to the SmartServer 3.3 software?

You will not require a device capacity license if you are only using the LON router, BACnet router, or LON remote network interface (RNI) of the SmartServer. You will require a capacity license if you are using any of the other features of the SmartServer.

If you purchased the promotional bundle with your SmartServer, our Customer Success team will provide a 1,000-device capacity license and a maintenance license for each bundle you bought prior to the SmartServer 3.3 release.

I need to increase the device capacity of my SmartServer because I need to add more devices to it – what are my options?

You can transfer the existing device capacity license to the cloud, purchase a new license with more capacity, and then download/activate the new license. Alternatively, you can add another device capacity license to your existing license. Note, you will most likely need to purchase a new Maintenance license as the total number of devices for maintenance licenses must meet or exceed the total number of devices for device capacity licenses. If you have a total of 110 devices in device capacity license then you need at least 110 devices in the maintenance license

Maintenance License

What is a maintenance license and what does it cover?

A maintenance license provides priority technical support and SmartServer software upgrades. Priority technical support is provided by the Customer Success team for users with active maintenance licenses. SmartServer software upgrades are any feature releases of the SmartServer software, not including SmartServer platform upgrades, starting with the SmartServer 3.3 software. Non-feature releases are identified as Updates in the SmartServer Release Notes, for example, SmartServer 3.2 Update 2 is a non-feature release. Platform releases are identified as platform releases in the SmartServer Release Notes. All other releases, starting with SmartServer 3.3, are feature releases.

Maintenance licenses are sold based on device count with a 1-year or 3-year term. The number of devices for all current maintenance licenses must meet or exceed the number of devices for all device capacity licenses.  If you have two 10-device device capacity licenses for a total of 20 devices then you need at least 20 devices for all the maintenance licenses. Typically, when you buy a device capacity license, you will buy a matching maintenance license (by device count).

When can I purchase an annual maintenance license?

You can purchase a maintenance license with a 1-year or 3-year term when you purchase a SmartServer, and at any time prior to termination of the maintenance license for your SmartServer.

I did not buy a maintenance license, but now I need to upgrade my SmartServer software – what do I do?

If you did not purchase an annual maintenance license with your SmartServer, or if you did not purchase a new annual maintenance license prior to the termination of your SmartServer maintenance license, then you can purchase a one-time upgrade license to upgrade to the current SmartServer software. You can also purchase an annual maintenance license within 30 days of purchasing a one-time upgrade license. Please contact our Customer Success team if you need a one-time upgrade license.

Will my maintenance license renew automatically?

No. A SmartServer CMS user can use the Manage Licenses dialog to add email notifications for maintenance expiration and renewals. If you configure notifications, the SmartServer CMS will send notification messages by email to the specified email address(es) on the defined notification days.

What happens if I return a SmartServer maintenance license?

When you activate a Maintenance license on the SmartServer, the maintenance license start-time gets recorded. When you return a license back to the license server the maintenance license is returned with an active start-time. This means maintenance time continues to run on the returned license. So if you activated a 1 year maintenance license and use it on a SmartServer for 3 months and then return it, and 4 months pass before you activate this same maintenance license on another SmartServer, the maintenance license will have 5 months left (12 - 3 - 4).

If I increase the device capacity on my SmartServer do I also need to increase the number of devices on the Maintenance license?

Yes in most cases. The number of devices for the maintenance license needs to match or exceed the number of devices specified by the device capacity licenses.  So if you need to add 10 more devices to the device capacity license then you need to add 10 devices to the maintenance license count. You can transfer the existing maintenance license to the cloud, purchase a new license with more devices, but if return an already activated maintenance license you will lose time on this maintenance license as the maintenance license start-time is when the license was first activated. Returning the Maintenance license does not change the license end-time. Alternatively, you can add another maintenance license to your existing license.
