Setting up the LON Channel
For SmartServer 3.4 to 4.1, see Setting up the LON Channel (Release 3.4 to 4.1).
For SmartServer 3.3 and prior releases, see Setting up the LON Channel (Release 3.3 and Prior).
This section consists of the following:
LON Channel Overview
The LON channel in the SmartServer IoT Starter Kit includes the following devices:
- An FT 6050 EVB target programmed with the multisensor example, which provides a simple LON device design with several different SPFT and UFPT functional blocks. This board supports multiple applications that can be used for various training exercises.
- A Smart Controls SC 100-MP device (powered using the 24 VAC power supply), which is programmed with an application that defines open loop sensors and actuators to model digital IO hardware.
The figure below shows the FT 6050 EVB and SC 100-MP devices, as well as how the switches and green panel indicators are connected to the SC 100-MP inputs and outputs as labeled in this photo.
See (Optional) Add a LON Interface for more information about configuring a LON interface using the SmartServer Configuration page.
Get started setting up the LON channel following the steps in the section below: Creating LON Devices.
Creating LON Devices
To create LON devices, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer CMS by clicking the CMS tab on the Configuration UI, or by entering the URL https://[SmartServer IP address]/cms/#/login.
Click the Import / Export button () on the main CMS dashboard. With SmartServer 3.6 and prior, you can also use the Import Device Types button () on the Device Types widget to load the DTP file.
Import / Export button () on the main CMS dashboard
The Import / Export dialog appears.- Select the Lon Channel.dtp.zip from the SmartServer GitHub Repository Starter Kit archive → LON Channel folder and place it in the Drop files to import area.
- Click IMPORT.
Notification messages (similar to the one shown below) will appear indicating that device types are being uploaded and the CPU usage on the main CMS page will show increased activity. - When the device types file has finished loading, click CANCEL to close the Import / Export dialog.
- Go to the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab, which will be used to add two LON devices to the system.
- Click the Create button () to add the FT 6050 EVB device, setting the following fields as shown in the figure below:
- Name: MS-01
- Integration method: Guided discovery
- Context: leave empty
- UID: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Driver: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Device type: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Press the service button located on the upper right portion of the FT 6050 EVB board as shown below.
Pressing the service pin while in ‘guided discovery’ will fill in the Driver, UID, and Device type fields for FT 6050 EVB board as shown below. - Click SAVE. The FT 6050 EVB device is added to the Devices widget.
- Click the Create button () to add the Smart Controls SC 100-MP device and set the following fields as shown in the figure below:
- Name: DIO-01
- Integration method: Guided discovery
- Context: leave empty
- UID: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Driver: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Device type: leave empty (will be filled in by guided discovery)
- Press the service button located on the lower left portion of the SC 100-MP device as shown below.
Pressing the service button populates the required fields of the SC 100-MP device as shown below. - Click SAVE.
At this point, you will have two unprovisioned LON devices (indicated by the blue device color) newly added to the SmartServer CMS Devices widget as shown below. - Select the DIO-01 and MS-01 devices by clicking on them, and then click the Action button () and select the Provision Selected action.
Both the MS-01 and DIO-01 device types are defined to include an application load at provisioning. The application load takes about 2-3 minutes to complete for each device. During this time, you can observe high frequency TX/RX LED activity on the U60. When this action is finished, the device color for the devices will turn from blue to green as shown below.
You now have a pair of LON devices provisioned in the SmartServer IoT.
Verify that the devices are working by following the steps in the section below: Verifying the LON Devices.
Verifying the LON Devices
To verify LON devices, perform the following steps:
- Click the Action button () for the MS-01 device and select the Wink action to perform verification routines.
With these routines, you should be able to observe a flashing sequence of the blue LEDs for about 5s on the FT 6050 EVB board. (Wink behavior is not implemented with the SC 100-MP.) - Click the Action button () for the MS-01 device and select the View Datapoints action.
Clicking View Datapoints brings up the Datapoints widget, which displays all of the datapoints for the MS-01 device.
