License Management is available with SmartServer 3.3 and higher.

You can download, activate, and return licenses for your SmartServer.  There are two types of licenses available for the SmartServer: a capacity license and a maintenance license.  A capacity license is required to provision, manage, monitor, and control any devices with your SmartServer.  A maintenance license is required to upgrade the software on your SmartServer for any upgrade releases after SmartServer 3.3.  A capacity license is not required if you only use the LON Remote Network Interface (RNI), LON routing, or BACnet routing features of your SmartServer. SmartServer Pi is available with SmartServer 4.2 and higher and also requires a SmartServer Core license that provides core SmartServer functionality and supports BACnet routing, device discovery, device import, and device creation. This license does not expire. See SmartServer Pi Getting Started and Managing Licenses for SmartServer Pi.

You can purchase a capacity or maintenance license from your SmartServer supplier.  The maintenance license for a SmartServer must match the capacity license. For example, if you buy a 200-device capacity license, the maintenance license must have a capacity of 200.

You can activate a license either online (where the SmartServer has a connection to the Internet) or offline (where the SmartServer does not have a connection to the Internet). For online license activation where the SmartServer has an Internet connection, licenses are activated using the SmartServer CMS Manage Licenses dialog box. See Activating Licenses Online Using the SmartServer CMS for more information. You will need a Customer ID to access the account licenses from the cloud using the SmartServer CMS Manage Licenses dialog.

If you are using offline activation, you can use the License Customer Portal to activate the device capacity license yourself by creating a device capacity offline activation file. You will need a License ID or email address in order to log into the License Customer Portal. License IDs are generated and maintained in the License Partner Portal and provided by partners. Customers who have an email contact that has been added by a partner can also use their email address to log into the License Customer Portal. Or,

To activate a maintenance license offline, contact the Customer Success team to provide you with an offline maintenance activation file. You can activate both licenses using the SmartServer CMS.

You can use the Manage Licenses dialog on the SmartServer CMS to view your SmartServer licensing information, manage licensing accounts, download and transfer licenses from and to the cloud, and set email notifications for maintenance expirations and renewals. The Manage Licenses dialog and its features are only available for the SmartServer CMS Owner user type. See Obtaining Licensing Information to get started using the Manage Licenses dialog.

A SmartServer License Partner Portal is available for EnOcean SmartServer partners to manage customer and project accounts and licenses, and to transfer licenses to customers as described in Using the License Partner Portal. EnOcean's Customer Success team provides partners the License Partner Portal login credentials. Within the License Partner Portal, projects that are owned by a partner are referenced as customer/project and can be uniquely identified by customer name (e.g., P2022-0208 or P-Building 1).

License Customer Portal is available for all SmartServer users to perform offline license activation for device capacity licenses as described in Activating Capacity Licenses Offline Using the License Customer Portal. Offline activation is only available through the License Customer Portal. A License ID or email address is required to log into the License Customer Portal. License IDs are generated and maintained in the License Partner Portal and provided by partners. Customers who have an email contact that has been added by a partner can also use their email address to log into the License Customer Portal.

SmartServer licenses are associated with customer licensing accounts.  A Customer ID identifies each customer licensing account.  The Customer ID is a unique identifier (e.g., 2133c667-af41-4518-94df-a2bb3b775330) for a customer licensing account. You can use the Customer ID to access the account licenses from the cloud using the SmartServer CMS Manage Licenses dialog as described in Activating Licenses Online Using the SmartServer CMS.

When a purchased license is added to the License Partner Portal, a License ID is generated. A License ID is a unique identifier (e.g., b1e52546-f2db-4053-b2dd-2ab2fa7732d2) for a SmartServer device capacity or maintenance license. The License ID is referred to as the EID when logging into the License Customer Portal as described in Activating Capacity Licenses Offline Using the License Customer Portal. When a license is transferred to a customer, a new, different License ID is created. At this point, the original License ID cannot be transferred or activated, but remains in the system for tracking purposes.

Device Capacity License

You can add a device capacity license to your SmartServer to provision, manage, monitor, and control devices with your SmartServer.  The SmartServer counts as one device towards the device capacity license.  You can purchase a device capacity license for up to 10, 50, 200, or 1000 devices for a SmartServer.  When you activate a device capacity license, the licensed capacity information appears on the SmartServer dashboard as shown in the example below. You can view your SmartServer device capacity as well as your used capacity in the SmartServer dashboard.  The following example is from a SmartServer with a 1000 device capacity license with four devices provisioned:

Unlicensed devices will appear with a purple icon on the CMS Devices widget. Operations that require communication with a physical device (such as provisioning, reading datapoints, and writing datapoints) will be disabled for unlicensed devices. Operations that do not require device communication (such as creating devices, defining datapoint properties, defining connections, defining BACnet Server configuration, setting up schedules, and defining sequences) will be enabled for both licensed and unlicensed devices. If you increase the device capacity by adding a new capacity license, your unlicensed devices will be changed to a licensed device status up to the number of licensed devices enabled by the new device capacity.

If the SmartServer device capacity is zero, or less than the number of devices defined for the SmartServer, a red exclamation point badge will appear on the SmartServer dashboard (as shown below) and on the Manage Licenses action in the Devices widget.

The model numbers and descriptions of available capacity licenses are as follows:

  • Model 72220-00 – SmartServer Trial License (5-device trial key)
  • Model 72220-10 – SmartServer D10 License (10-device capacity)
  • Model 72220-50 – SmartServer D50 License (50-device capacity)
  • Model 72220-200 – SmartServer D200 License (200-device capacity)
  • Model 72220-1000 – SmartServer D1000 License (1,000-device capacity)

Maintenance License

You can add a one or three-year maintenance license to receive priority support and enable installation of upgrades during the maintenance period.  You can purchase a maintenance license with your initial SmartServer purchase, and you can extend your maintenance license at any time prior to the end of your maintenance period.  You cannot extend a maintenance license after it expires.  You can view your SmartServer maintenance license status in the SmartServer dashboard.  The following example is from a SmartServer with an active maintenance license that is not close to expiration..

Priority support is provided by the Customer Success team for users with active maintenance licenses. Upgrades are SmartServers software updates that require an active maintenance license. Upgrades are major (i.e., 3.3 to 4.0) and minor (3.3 to 3.4) releases. Updates are non-feature releases (e.g., 3.3 to 3.3 Update 1) and do not require a maintenance license.

You can hover over the Maintenance indicator to display the date that the maintenance license is set to expire or has expired, for example: Active indicates that the maintenance license is active with an expiration date more than 60 days in the future. Expires <date> indicates that the maintenance license is active but will expire on the date shown, when the expiration date is within 60 days. Inactive indicates that the maintenance license is inactive.

You can use the SmartServer to set maintenance expiration and renewal email notifications on your preferred notification days. See Creating License Notifications for information on how to set up email notifications.

The model numbers and descriptions of available types of maintenance licenses are as follows:

  • Model 92201R-P-10 – SmartServer D10 Premium Pass (3-year maintenance for up to 10 device capacity, support agent, and online service desk support)
