The i.LON 700 can be replaced with a SmartServer IoT plus a U60 FT or U60 TP-1250 interface.

The examples below show how to use the SmartServer IoT as a direct replacement for two different i.LON 700 use-cases.

To configure the SmartServer to use RNI or IP-852 routing, see Adding a LON Interface. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7 Update 1, go to the Features Configuration tab.

Example 1: Direct replacement for i.LON 700 (self-repeater IP-852 routing) - using the SmartServer as a self-repeater

The SmartServer IoT can be used as a direct replacement of the the i.LON 700 or i.LON 600 "Self-installed router as repeater" mode.  This feature allows you to connect devices on multiple SmartServers, i.LON 700s and i.LON 600s LonWork channels without using a Network Integration tool to provision the SmartServer or LON 700.

Self-repeating is used to tie devices for two or more LON networks together in which the NetworkM Integration  tool doesn't know how to provision IP-852 routers. For example, this feature is used to tie LON networks for two or more floors together, or two or more buildings together, so that the head-end software can access the datapoints from multiple floors or buildings.

For direct replacement, perform the following steps:

  1. Change the SmartServer IP address settings on the Network Configuration page (see Configure Your SmartServer) for the Ethernet LAN or WAN ports you are using to Static IP Address or DHCP.

Note: Do not leave the IP address interface set to Startup Mode - DHCP with rapid fallback to static.

  2. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7, disable the Startup Mode checkbox.

  3. Verify the IP-852 checkbox is enabled on the Adding a LON Interface page. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7 Update 1, go to thFeatures Configuration tab.

  4. Reboot the SmartServer.

  5. Add the SmartServer to the IP-852 Config Server.

When all the devices are green, right-click the channel and click update channel.

Example 2: Direct replacement for i.LON 700 (IP-852 routing)

The SmartServer IoT with a single U60 can be used as a direct replacement for an i.LON 700 that is used for IP-852 routing. In this case, you need to provision the IP-852 router and U60 for IP-852 routing.

  3. Disable the LON/IP Class A Network Override Standard checkbox on the LON Configuration page, as described on Adding a LON Interface.

  4. Reboot the SmartServer.

  5. Switch the SmartServer to LON Independent Management Mode (IMM) using the CMS Devices widget - very important.

  6. Verify the IP-852 checkbox is enabled on the Adding a LON Interface page. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7 Update 1, go to Features Configuration tab.

  7. Add the SmartServer to the IP-852 Config Server.

When all the devices are green, right-click the channel and click update channel.

  8. Perform a replacement in the LNS network for the IP-852 Router.

  9. Press the IP-852 service pin on the Adding a LON Interface page. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7 Update 1, go to Features Configuration tab.

  10. Perform a replacement in the LNS network for the U60 Router.

  11. Press the U60 service pin on the Adding a LON Interface page. For SmartServer IoT release prior to 2.7 Update 1, go to the System Configuration tab.
