Migrating from the i.LON 700 to the SmartServer

You can replace an i.LON 700 with a SmartServer. The i.LON 700 supports two types of LON interfaces.  The first is a LON remote network interface (RNI).  The seconds is a LON router.  To configure the SmartServer to use a LON RNI, see Adding a LON Interface.

This page describes two procedures for configuring the SmartServer to use a LON router.  Use the first procedure if your i.LON 700 is set up as a self-installed LON repeater.  Use the second procedure if your i.LON 700 is set up as a LON router that is configured with an external network integration tool such as the IzoT Commissioning Tool (CT) or LonMaker Integration Tool.

Replacing an i.LON 700 Self-installed LON Repeater with a SmartServer

You can replace an i.LON 700 configured as a self-installed LON repeater with a SmartServer.  You can use multiple SmartServers, i.LONs, and third-party IP-852 routers configured as self-installed LON repeaters to connect LON devices on multiple LON FT and TP-1250 channels using a LON IP-852 backbone channel.  By using self-installation, you will not have to use a LON network integration tool to install the LON repeaters.

To replace an i.LON 700 configured as a self-installed LON repeater with a SmartServer, follow these steps:

  1. Change the SmartServer IP address settings on the Configuration page Network tab (see Configure Your SmartServer) for the Ethernet LAN or WAN ports you are using to Static IP Address or DHCP.

  2. Verify the SmartServer IP address settings are not configured for Startup Mode.  You can use startup for initial network setup, but it is not suitable for operational use.

  3. Verify IP-852 is enabled as described on the Adding a LON Interface page.

  4. Reboot the SmartServer.

  5. Add the SmartServer to the IP-852 configuration server.  If you are using the EnOcean IP-852 Configuration Server, when all the devices are green, right-click the channel and click Update Channel.

Replacing an i.LON 700 Configured LON Router with a SmartServer

You can replace an i.LON 700 configured as a LON router with an external LON network integration tool with a SmartServer using the same LON network integration tool.  You can use multiple SmartServers, i.LONs, and third-party IP-852 routers configured with a LON network integration tool to connect LON devices on multiple LON FT and TP-1250 channels using a LON IP-852 backbone channel.  For example, the following figure illustrates a network with multiple IP-852 routers managed by the IzoT Commissioning Tool.

To replace an i.LON 700 configured as a LON router with an external LON network integration tool with a SmartServer, follow these steps:

  3. Disable the LON/IP Class A Network Override Standard checkbox on the Configuration page LON tab, as described on Adding a LON Interface.

  4. Reboot the SmartServer.

  5. Switch the SmartServer to LON Independent Management Mode (IMM) using the CMS Devices widget.

  6. Verify IP-852 is enabled as described on the Adding a LON Interface page.

  7. Add the SmartServer to the IP-852 configuration server.  If you are using the EnOcean IP-852 Configuration Server, when all the devices are green, right-click the channel and click Update Channel.

  8. Use your network integration tool to replace the i.LON 700 router with your SmartServer router.

  9. When prompted by your network integration tool, press the IP-852 service button on the Configuration page LON tab.
