Provisioning Devices (Release 3.3 and Prior)

Provisioning and Deprovisioning a Device

Depending on the device state, a menu option will appear providing the ability to provision or deprovision a device from the Devices widget.

  1. To provision or deprovision a device, click the Action button () on the Devices widget for the desired device.



  2. Select the Provision Device or Deprovision Device action as appropriate.

    For devices that are not yet provisioned, the Provision Device action will appear.



    For devices that are provisioned, the Deprovision Device action will appear.

    The device state will be updated as appropriate.

Provisioning and Deprovisioning Multiple Devices

Multiple devices may be provisioned or deprovisioned at the same time.

  1. To provision or deprovision multiple devices, select the desired devices. 

    A checkmark will appear for the selected devices.



  2. Click the Action button () on the Devices widget, and select the Provision Selected Edge Devices or Deprovision Selected Edge Devices action as appropriate.

    or



    The device state will be updated as appropriate.

Provisioning Devices in a Group

  1. To provision all devices in a group, click the Action button () for the selected group on the Groups widget, and select the Provision All Devices action.



  2. Click OK in the Confirmation dialog box to provision devices in the selected group.

Deprovisioning Devices in a Group

  1. To deprovision all devices in a group, click the Action button () for the selected group on the Groups widget, and select the Deprovision All Devices action.



  2. Click OK in the Confirmation dialog box to deprovision devices in the selected group.

Reprovisioning LON Devices

Once devices are provisioned, they appear green in the Devices widget. 

It is good practice to reprovision LON devices that have been discovered and appear green (already provisioned) in the Devices widget to ensure that the LON devices are actually provisioned with the current configuration.

This scenario, where a LON device appears provisioned but may not be provisioned with the current configuration, may occur when a LON device is created and provisioned, and then the SmartServer IoT is reset to defaults using, for example, the configuration pages described in Resetting the SmartServer IoT to Factory Defaults. When the LON device is discovered after the reset, it will appear green even though the device was not subsequently provisioned.

Additionally, this scenario may occur when a LON device is defined and provisioned using LNS, and then the SmartServer is installed and the device is created in the CMS.

In these cases, the LON devices may appear green, but still require reprovisioning to ensure that they are provisioned with the current configuration.

To reprovision a device, perform the following steps:

  1. Click the action button () on the Devices widget for the selected device.



  2. Select the Reprovision Device action.



  3. Click OK in the Confirmation dialog box to reprovision the selected device.

Replacing a Device

  1. To replace a device, click the Action button () on the Devices widget for the device you wish to replace.

    Note: A manual reset is necessary when replacing an IOX device. Performing a 617827 will help identify the device as indicated by the LEDs.




  2. Select the Replace Device action.



  3. Update the MAC Address or UID (unique identifier) property.



  4. Click REPLACE.

Updating Device Firmware

To update firmware for all devices, click the Action button () on the Devices widget and select the Update Firmware for All Devices action.

Note: This operation is not available with SmartServer IoT 2.7 or higher.

Monitoring Events (Putting a Device in Onnet / Offnet Mode)

With SmartServer IoT 2.5 or higher, the ability to put devices in onnet/offnet mode is available for the LonTalk subsystem. The default mode is onnet. In offnet mode, datapoint monitoring is suspended. This mode is useful during extensive servicing or troubleshooting, as it reduces the burden and traffic noise, and prevents the buildup of a backlog of datapoint value updates. 

To put a device in onnet/offnet mode, click the Action button () on the Devices widget and select the Put Onnet Mode / Put Offnet Mode action. The device is put into the selected mode.

With SmartServer IoT 2.7 or higher, the ability pause/monitor events is available for the LonTalk subsystem with the pause () and monitor () icons located at the top of the Devices widget. 

A monitoring event is an event generated by a driver, such as the LON driver, BACnet driver, Modbus driver, or IAP driver (e.g., IOX), to publish an update to a datapoint value via IAP/MQ. The driver may have received the updated value as a result of a poll request, an event-driven update from an external edge device (e.g., LON or BACnet), or an internally generated event-driven update (e.g., IOX).  For drivers that support external edge-device polling, such as LON, BACnet, and Modbus, the drivers will stop polling while monitoring is paused. For drivers that support event-driven updates, the drivers will suppress publishing the event-driven update via IAP/MQ while monitoring is paused.

To pause all monitoring events, click the Pause button ().

To resume all monitoring events, click the Play button ().

Removing a Device

  1. To remove a device, click the Action button () on the Devices widget.



  2. Select the Remove action.



  3. Click OK in the Confirmation dialog box to remove the selected device.
