Testing Devices
For SmartServer 3.3 and prior releases, see Testing Devices (Release 3.3 and Prior).
You can test provisioned devices to confirm they are operating correctly.
This page consists of the following sections:
Identifying and Testing a Device
You can use the following actions to identify and test a provisioned device using the Devices widget:
- Wink – sends a command to the device to perform a device-specific identification operation such as blinking a light on the device.
- Test – sends a command to the device to test communication with the device and report key operational statistics for the device.
To perform these verification routines, perform the following steps:
Open the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab.
- Click the Expand button ( ) on the top right of the widget to view all the available information.
- Click the Action button () and then select the Wink or Test action.
For Wink, if the device supports winking, then the device documentation will specify how the device responds to a wink request.
For Test, the test results appear similar to the example shown below. - To set up another test, scroll down and use the Count slider to set how many times the test will be performed, and then click START.
An example of the Test results are shown below.
If a device is on the zero length domain, then --- will appear for the LON Domain value indicating zero length. - Click CLOSE to exit testing, or set up another test and then click START.
Displaying Device Information
The sections that follow describe displaying device information.
Device Selection Visual Reset
Following a SmartServer IoT upgrade or re-image, if the Devices widget displays a "globe" device (), then you will need to clear the web browser data. The appearance of this device visual is due to cached data from the previous version. To clear the browser's cached data, see Clearing the Browser's Cache.
Showing a Device on the Map
To show a device on the map (Locations widget), perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab.
- Click the Action button ( for the desired device and select the Show on Map action.
The device will appear on the Locations widget (a floor plan in the example below). If the Locations widget is not already displayed on the dashboard, a prompt will appear to confirm opening the Locations widget.
Showing Device Properties
To show device properties, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab.
- Click the Action button () and select the View All Properties action.
A table with all of the devices and their properties is displayed.For LON, LON PL, BACnet, and Modbus devices, the following properties may be displayed:
Name
Category
UID
Firmware Version
Asset Tag
Description
Installation Date
Latitude
- Longitude
- SID/UID
- Click BACK to return to the Devices widget view.
Viewing Device Datapoints
For SmartServer 4.0, Viewing device datapoints from the Devices widget is not available. To view device datapoints, use the Datapoints widget.
Viewing device datapoints from the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab, displays the following information:
- Device
- Block name
- Block index
- Datapoint name
- Value
- Preset
The datapoint information that is displayed is a cached value.
To view device datapoints, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab.
- Click the Action button () for the desired device and select the View Datapoints action.
Or, to view datapoints for all devices, click the Action button () and select the View All Datapoints action.
The device datapoints (cached values) are displayed.

More information about using the Datapoints widget appears in the sections below. - Click BACK to return to the Devices widget view.
Resetting a Device
To reset a device, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Devices widget, EDGE DEVICES tab.
- Click the Action button ( for the desired device and select the Reset action.
Or, to reset selected devices, click the devices (a checkmark will appear), and then click the Action button () and select the Reset Selected action.
Or, to reset all devices, click the Action button () and select the Reset All action.
The selected device(s) is reset. If a device that does not support reset operations was selected, then an error message will appear in the upper-right corner similar to the example below.
