Segment Discovery
Each edge server is provided with a default set of credentials, as discussed in Default Discovery Endpoint. These credentials include addressing and authorization details.
The designated MACID for use with segment discovery is also configured in the edge server, tool, or native IAP device. These details are installed at production time or can be provided when launching the tool.
Edge Server MACID
The designated MACID is a 6-byte, 8-byte or 16-byte MACID, presented as a string of pairs of hexadecimal digits separated by a hyphen or colon.
For example: F2-AE-02-45-67-89 |
- For edge servers with one Ethernet or WiFi adapter, that adapter’s real 6-byte or 8-byte MACID becomes its designated MACID.
- For edge servers with multiple Ethernet or WiFi adapters, the manufacturer selects one as the designated MACID.
- For edge servers without any real MACID, a 16-byte pseudo-MACID is provided. This is primarily used by test, diagnostics, and development tools.
The designated MACID is also available to the human installer or operator, for example as a printed label, QR code, or barcode on the product case or packaging. The designated MACID is never used for physical addressing in the network and therefore is not required to be reachable from the CMS.
Discovery Process
This connection supports the segment discovery and provisioning messages only. Once the segment is provisioned, the segment connects with the CMS using the details resulting from the provisioning process as detailed in Accepting the Provisioning Message.
