Changing the SmartServer Pi User Passwords
SmartServer Pi is available with SmartServer 4.2 and higher.
For SmartServer 4.4 and higher, the default SmartServer Pi CMS username and password is apollo / apollo.
For SmartServer 4.3 Update 1 and prior, the SmartServer Pi CMS password for the default apollo and admin user accounts is configured in the smartserver.ini file with the SmartServer Pi installation. The password that is defined in the smartserver.ini file does not have any effect on the Raspberry Pi OS / SmartServer Pi Configuration page password. This section describes how to change SmartServer Pi CMS user passwords.
Since enhanced security is enabled by default for the SmartServer Pi, you will be prompted to change the password to meet stronger password requirements when you first log in. This section describes how to set a stronger password that meets enhanced-security password requirements. To disable enhanced security, see Configuring Security (Authentication Method).
The SmartServer Pi OS user accounts and Configuration page login accesses (default user apollo, as set in the Install the Raspberry Pi OS for SmartServer Pi section) are not configured with the CMS Users widget, but are managed through the SmartServer Pi Configuration page as with all other OS operations. The SmartServer Pi Configuration page internally uses the Raspberry Pi OS user accounts. The OS is fully client-owned and configured and there is no synchronization between the SmartServer Pi CMS user and OS user accounts. This section also describes how to change the Configuration page and SSH login password using the SmartServer Pi Configuration page Accounts tab as an example.

Setting a Strong Password for Enhanced Security
Enhanced security is enabled by default for the SmartServer Pi. If you want to lighten the requirements for setting passwords, you can disable this feature as described in the Configuring Security (Authentication Method) section.
When you fist log into the SmartServer Pi CMS with a password that does not meet the strong, enhanced-security password requirements, you will see the Change Password dialog box.
The Change Password dialog box requires that you set a new password containing at least 14 characters and including each of the following:
- An uppercase letter ( A-Z )
- A lowercase letter ( a-z )
- A number ( 0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 )
- A special character ( ! # $ % & ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~ ).
The password must conform to the following restrictions:
- Single quote ( ' ), double quote ( “ ), spaces, and tabs are not allowed.
- Systematic characters (e.g., 1234 and other commonly guessed character patterns) are not allowed.
- The New Password and Confirm New Password entries must match.
- The New Password cannot match any one of the last five passwords.
To reveal the disguised password characters, click the Show Password button (
).To store the new password, click Save.
For SmartServer 4.3 Update 1 and prior, this password change does not effect the password setting in the smartserver.ini file.
Changing the SmartServer Pi CMS apollo and admin User Passwords
To change the default apollo and admin password for the SmartServer Pi CMS, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer Pi CMS and log in with your apollo or admin username.
- If the Change Password dialog box appears, see the Enhancing Password Security section below.
- Open the Users widget. Click the Expand button ().
- Click the user's Edit button ().
The Edit User view appears. - Click the Password field and enter a new apollo/admin user password.
- Click the Confirm Password field and enter the same new apollo/admin user password.
- Click Save to store the new apollo/admin user password.

Changing the SmartServer Pi CMS User Passwords
SmartServer Pi user passwords can be reset through the Users widget. To change the password for a SmartServer Pi CMS user, see Resetting User Passwords in the Managing SmartServer IoT Passwords section. See also Defining Users for more information.
Changing the SmartServer Pi Configuration Page and SSH Login Password
To change the password for the SmartServer Pi Configuration page and SSH login, perform the following steps:
- Open the SmartServer Pi Configuration page.
The SmartServer Pi Configuration page opens. The Configuration tab that appears depends on your cache data. - Click the Accounts tab.
The Accounts view appears. - Click on your apollo user account to view and/or manage account settings.
- Click Set Password.
The Set Password dialog box appears. - Enter the old password in the Old Password field, and new password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields. The New Password and Confirm New Password entries must match.
- Click Set Password to save the new password.
