Updating or Re-imaging the SmartServer IoT
You can update or upgrade your SmartServer IoT to a newer release of the software, if available. You can re-image your SmartServer IoT with the same release that is already loaded on your SmartServer IoT to start over with a factory configuration. You can also re-image your SmartServer IoT with a different release of the SmartServer software to update, upgrade, or downgrade the software release. An update is a release with the same release number plus "Update" in the name, for example, an update from SmartServer 3.6 to SmartServer 3.6 Update 2. An upgrade is a release with a different release number, for example upgrading from SmartServer 3.4 to SmartServer 3.6. An active SmartServer maintenance license is required to upgrade your SmartServer. You can also downgrade or restore your SmartServer software by restoring from a backup image as described in Restoring the System or Database in Backing Up, Restoring, and Cloning the SmartServer.
SmartServer versions are hardware specific. See Determining SmartServer Software Version Compatibility before upgrading or downgrading to verify compatibility for your update.
You can use any of the following methods to update, upgrade, or re-image your SmartServer:
- Update or upgrade the SmartServer using the SmartServer CMS with Internet Connection as described in Updating the SmartServer using the SmartServer CMS with an Internet Connection.
This method is the easiest if your SmartServer has an Internet connection. You download a small image loader to your computer, drag it to the SmartServer CMS, and update the SmartServer using the file. An Internet connection is required, but a USB flash drive is not required. You can use this method with the Remote CMS to update or upgrade multiple SmartServers.
- Update or upgrade the SmartServer using the SmartServer CMS without an Internet Connection as described in Updating the SmartServer using the SmartServer CMS without an Internet Connection.
This method is the easiest if your SmartServer does not have an Internet connection and you do not have simple access to the SmartServer to install a USB flash drive. You download a small image loader to your computer and modify it to change the image source. You also download the new image and host it on your LAN. You then drag your modified image loader to the SmartServer CMS, and update the SmartServer using the file. An Internet connection is required to download the files initially, but Internet access is not required for the SmartServer, and USB flash drive is not required. You can use this method with the Remote CMS to update or upgrade multiple SmartServers. - Update or upgrade the SmartServer using the SmartServer Configuration page and a USB flash drive as described in Updating the SmartServer using the SmartServer Configuration Page.
This method is the easiest if your SmartServer does not have an Internet connection. You download a SmartServer image using a computer with an Internet connection, copy the image to a USB flash drive, plug the USB flash drive into your SmartServer, and then start the update or upgrade from the SmartServer Configuration page. Refer to the Configure Your SmartServer section for more information about the Configuration UI settings and functions. - Update, upgrade, or re-image the SmartServer using the SmartServer console interface, and a USB flash drive as described in Updating or Re-imaging the SmartServer with the SmartServer Console.
This method is the easiest if you want to delete all your data and re-image your SmartServer at the same time. You download a SmartServer image using a computer with an Internet connection, copy the image to a USB flash drive, plug the USB flash drive into your SmartServer, and then start the update, upgrade, or re-image from the SmartServer console interface.
