Updating or Re-imaging the SmartServer Pi

SmartServer Pi is available with SmartServer 4.2 and higher.

This section describes how to update or re-image the SmartServer Pi. Perform an update if you want to retain all of the SmartServer Pi data. This process pulls new containers and update files that tell the system how to run new containers. Perform a re-image if you want to remove all of the SmartServer Pi data. This process includes two remove commands that purges the SmartServer Pi data (step #3 in the procedure below).

To update or re-image the SmartServer Pi, perform the following steps:

  1. Perform a full system backup of SmartServer Pi. This backup can be used to restore the system in the event of a failure in the update/install process due to power or connectivity.

  2. Open a terminal window connection to the server.

  3. If you are re-imaging the SmartServer Pi, then enter the commands shown below to remove SmartServer Pi from your server. If you are updating the SmartServer Pi, then continue with the next step.

    $ sudo apt-get remove --purge smartserver-software
    $ sudo rm -rf /var/smartserver
  4. Follow the installation procedure using the .tar.gz package for updated software version. See Installing SmartServer Pi.

    You do not need to recreate the /etc/smartserver directory or modify the smartserver.ini file.

  5. If you are re-imaging the SmartServer Pi, then go to the Manage Licenses dialog to manage your customer account and activate licenses. Re-enter the Customer ID for the SmartServer Pi licenses to re-appear. The Manage Licenses dialog is accessible on system startup as well as from the SmartServer CMS. See Activating Licenses Online Using the SmartServer CMS for more information.
