Connect the i.LON 700 Power Input

The i.LON 700 requires a 10.5 – 30VDC or a 12 – 30VAC 50/60Hz power source attached to the power input on the i.LON 700. It requires an external low voltage power source to supply additional power for devices that are plugged into it. When selecting the DC or AC power source for your i.LON 700, consider the following:

  1. The power requirements of attached USB devices.
  2. The operating temperature range.
  3. The sharing of power with other low voltage control devices in the cabinet.

This section describes how to determine the external low voltage power requirements and how to connect the power source to the i.LON 700 power input. It consists of the following:

DC Power Source Requirements

You can use a DC power source with the i.LON 700. The following table summarizes the i.LON 700 DC power requirements as well as the power requirements from typical devices that you will plug into the i.LON 700. Select a power source that can supply the required power across the temperature range where you intend to use it. Refer to the following table to determine the DC power requirements for your i.LON 700 and for any additional devices that are plugged into it.

Note: The rating for your selected power source must be higher than the total demand of the products used in your i.LON 700 application, and must operate within the temperature range where you intend to use it.

Example scenario: To power an i.LON 700 with four U60 FT-10 channels, the selected power source must supply: 5 + (4 * 1) = 9 W.

Power Considerations

Refer to the following table to determine the AC power requirements for your i.LON 700 and for any additional devices that are plugged into it.

Note: The rating for your selected power source must be higher than the total demand of the products used in your SmartServer IoT application, and must operate within the temperature range where you intend to use it.

Grounding Considerations

The i.LON 700 can be powered using 12-24 VAC power that is not grounded to earth/safety ground.

In the U.S., NEC code requires that one leg of the secondary of a 24 VAC Class 2 transformer must be connected to earth when the voltage of the primary side exceeds 150VAC. Some code jurisdictions require this ground connection in all installations. Code also requires protection fuses on the secondary, and in some cases, on the primary as well.

In these cases, you need to provide a 1-1 isolation transformer that does not connect the secondary to earth/safety ground as shown in figure below.

AC power i.LON 700 with a 240 VAC power source. NEC code mandates connection to earth on the secondary of the first transformer with an isolation transformer to power the i.LON 700.

Warning: Grounding one leg of the i.LON 700 AC input will create fault conditions that will damage the i.LON 700 when it is connected to a PC that may also connect to earth through the USB shield. The figure below shows the connection scheme that must be avoided if you have grounded input.

Avoid this connection scheme if you have a grounded input.

Power Supply Design Considerations

It is common to supply power to multiple low voltage control components in a control cabinet. Doing so requires consideration of the power supply design for each device that is connected to the secondary of the transformer.

Warning: The i.LON 700 has a full wave bridge rectifier power supply design. If the Class 2 transformer powers the i.LON 700 and other control equipment, you must:

  1. Only connect control equipment that has a full wave bridge rectifier power supply design; equipment that has a half wave bridge rectifier power supply design should not be used with the i.LON 700.

  2. If information about the power supply design for the other control equipment is unknown, do not share power without using an isolation transformer for the i.LON 700.

  3. Verify that the other control equipment does not connect its logic ground to earth/safety ground.

Power Source Connections

Connect the power source to the right two connectors on the power input shown in the following figure. The power input is polarity insensitive so you can connect the two power inputs to either power input pin. You can optionally connect the ground input to earth ground. A ground connection is not required.

The screw terminals accept 0.22mm2 – 3.3mm2 (22 – 12AWG) gauge solid wire. The optimum tightening torque for the screw terminals is 0.5 Nm  (4.4 lbs. in.) maximum. The ideal flathead screwdriver tip width for use with the screw terminal connectors is 3mm (0.12”). Strip wires to a length of 7mm (0.28”). You can use end sleeves to prevent fraying and inadvertent contact with adjacent terminals.

When you apply power to the i.LON 700, the LEDs on the i.LON 700 will flash as the unit boots. Once the unit is powered and operational, the green Power/Wink LED will stay on solid.
