Activating Licenses Online Using the SmartServer CMS
License Management is required with SmartServer 3.3 and higher.
To activate licenses online, you will need to perform the following steps:
- Set up a customer account on the SmartServer CMS
- Download and activate the license using the CMS
The sections that follow describe the online activation process as well as how to transfer licenses to the cloud when using a SmartServer that is connected to the Internet.
Setting up the Customer Account
To enter a Customer ID for an account, perform the following steps:
- Start the SmartServer CMS as described in Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Manage Licenses dialog on the SmartServer CMS. You can use the Manage Licenses dialog to manage your customer account and activate a license. The Manage Licenses dialog is accessible on system startup as well as from the SmartServer CMS.
- Select the Manage Customer Accounts button ().
Doing so opens the Manage Customer Accounts view and displays the following information:- Segment Controller (read-only column)
- Install Code (read-only column)
Customer ID – a unique identifier (e.g., 2133c667-af41-4518-94df-a2bb3b775330) for a customer project account. A customer ID is generated when a customer project account is added to the License Partner Portal.
License Partner Portal vs. License Customer Portal
The License Partner Portal can be used by a partner (EnOcean's customer) to manage customer/project accounts and purchased licenses (as described in the Using the License Partner Portal section).The License Customer Portal can be used by partners or customers to perform offline capacity license activation (as described in the Activating Licenses Offline section).
Enter your Customer ID in the Customer ID column as shown in the example below. (The Customer ID is assigned at the License Partner Portal.)
When a Customer ID is entered, the Save Changes button () and Discard Changes button () will appear on the right side of the Customer ID column.
- Click the Save Changes button () to store the Customer ID.
Click the Discard Changes button () to cancel changes. - Click BACK.
The Manage Licenses dialog appears.

Downloading and Activating Licenses from the Cloud
To download and activate a license(s) from the cloud, perform the following steps:
- Start the SmartServer CMS as described in Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Manage Licenses dialog on the SmartServer CMS.
- Click the Download Licenses from the Cloud button ().
The SmartServer downloads available licenses from the cloud.
Licenses that were loaded from the cloud for your Customer ID appear on the Download Licenses from Cloud view with the following information:- Segment Controller (read-only column) – identifies the SmartServer IoT install code
- License ID – indicates the license ID(s)
Transfer Date – displays the date that the license was assigned, or the date that the license was transferred back to cloud
- Description – shows a brief description of the license type (device capacity or maintenance) and the expiration date for maintenance licenses
- Select the license(s) you want to activate (the checkmark changes from blue to yellow).
- Click ACTIVATE to activate the license(s). The selected license(s) are activated. This operation may take a couple of minutes to complete.
When the process is completed, the selected license(s) no longer appear on the Download Licenses from Cloud view, and will appear on the Manage Licenses dialog. - Click BACK to return to the Manage Licenses dialog.
- Click CLOSE on the the Manage Licenses dialog to exit the license management operations.
Transferring Licenses to the Cloud (Online)
If you want to replace a device capacity or maintenance license that has been activated on your SmartServer, and your SmartServer is connected to the Internet, you can transfer that license(s) back to the cloud. You can then download and activate another license for your system.
Manually provision LON, BACnet, and Modbus devices after transferring licenses in DMM
When licenses are transferred to the cloud, LON, BACnet, and Modbus devices will appear in an unlicensed (purple) state. Once a new license is downloaded and activated on the SmartServer, these devices will appear in an unprovisioned (blue) state. At this point, you will need to manually provision the LON, BACnet, and Modbus devices. The devices will then appear in the provisioned (green) state in the Devices widget.
To transfer licenses to the cloud, perform the following steps:
- Start the SmartServer CMS as described in Open the SmartServer CMS.
- Open the Manage Licenses dialog on the SmartServer CMS.
- Click the Transfer to Cloud button ().
The following confirmation dialog box appears. - Click TRANSFER LICENSES to initiate the transfer operation. All device capacity and maintenance licenses that appear in the list are transferred to the cloud.
- Click CLOSE on the Manage Licenses dialog to exit the license management operations.
